Bandana Tips & Tricks

Both Lifestyle2.JPG

Our bandanas are designed to be worn OR displayed as unique prints on your wall. In this post, we'll share favorite methods of tying bandanas to wear, tips for displaying them on your walls, how to care for them, and some fun extra tips.

WEARING YOUR BANDANA

We get this question a lot - "how do you wear your bandanas?" We have three favorite go-to methods, all using a very similar wrap technique, with different functions and unique looks!

1. The Day-Tripper

Effortlessly cool with a hint of outdoorsy. Cotton bandanas are great for wicking sweat in warmer weather, or adding a little sass to any outfit.

Shown here with our Psychoactive Plants bandana.

  • Fold your bandana in half to form a triangle.
  • Fold continuously from the bottom corner up, in approximately 1" increments.
  • Tie in a double knot around your neck.

(TIP: On hot days, wet your bandana with cool water, wring out, and wear slightly damp. It'll act as a cooling system for your whole bod! For extra chill, put a drop or two of peppermint oil on the back of your neck before putting on your bandana. Stay cool!)

2. The Sailor

Slightly nautical and perfect for summer. This option is great for a design with cool corner motifs, like our Symbols of LA style.

  • Fold your bandana in half to form a triangle.
  • Fold continuously from the top of the folded bandana, toward the point, in approximately 1" increments.
  • Stop when a small tail has formed.
  • Tie in a double knot around your neck - wear with the knot facing forward (as in Style 1), with the tail at your back or slightly off to the side.

3. The Riveter

Sweep your hair out of your face with this method, a favorite for warmer weather, or no-fuss hair days. Looks great with high ponies, top knots, shorter hair styles... everything, really!

Shown here with our Native Plants of California bandana.

  • Fold your bandana in half to form a triangle.
  • Fold continuously from the bottom corner up, in approximately 1" increments. (End with a long skinny band, like from Style 1.)
  • Tie in a double knot, just at your hairline, wrapping the bandana from the nape of your neck.
  • You want it to be snug but not tight - too tight and it'll slide out of place.

(TIP: Spray the underside of the folded-up bandana with dry shampoo or hairspray to give it some grip - this will help it to stay in place.)

CARING FOR YOUR BANDANA

The secret to a "so soft it looks like you've owned it for years" bandana is to hand-wash in luke warm water (with gentle laundry soap like Dr. Bronner's) once before you wear it, and every now and then to give it a refresh - especially if you've been sweating! After washing, we recommend air-drying your bandana; you can iron a little (on low heat, on the non-printed side), but wrinkles will fall out naturally as you wear it in.

DISPLAYING YOUR BANDANA

Our bandanas have a size range of 20"x20" to 22"x22", and plenty of companies stock frames in these sizes.

The Ikea Ribba frame comes in a 20"x20" size, which will fit any of our bandanas. If your bandana is a little larger than the frame, don't worry! Most frames come with pre-cut mat board - lay your bandana face down, center the mat on it, then fold loose edges over the mat, securing with paper tape (like masking or blue painter's tape).
