Natural Dye Care

The plant-derived dyes we use are typically colorfast, meaning they withstand regular wearing, washing, and light exposure while retaining their color for years.

Some fading over time can be expected, but if you feel your piece has faded quickly or significantly, we are happy to re-dye it within your first year of purchase. Take a photo of your piece and get in touch with us via the Contact page–we’ll be happy to help find a solution!

While our dyes are “fixed” and relatively permanent on fabric, there are some steps you can take to ensure your naturally dyed piece retains its color for the long haul.

  • Washing in cold water (as infrequently as possible), preferably by hand, is recommended.

  • Shifts in pH can change natural dye colors dramatically, so make sure to use a gentle detergent. Any harsh detergents, especially those containing baking soda, can strip or shift dye colors. (We use Seventh Generation liquid detergent and are happy with the results.)

  • Keep in mind that other substances coming in contact with your naturally dyed goods can also shift or remove colors. For example, a spilled cup of tea, coffee, or juice (acidic) can have a bleaching effect on natural dyes; overly-alkaline deodorants can leave dark marks.

  • Never dry clean naturally dyed goods–the harsh chemicals will damage dye colors.

  • Most naturally dyed pieces can be tumble dried on low heat, but air drying is recommended. Always air dry out of direct sunlight.

  • Avoid extended UV exposure when possible. Some dyes (like tannins) can darken with light exposure, but others are susceptible to fading over time, just like synthetic dyes.

  • If you are hanging one of our bandanas on the wall as art, we recommend choosing a space that doesn’t receive direct sunlight.

General care instructions:
Hand wash with mild detergent in cold water (or on delicate cycle with like colors)
Do not dry clean
Air dry in the shade or tumble dry low
Limit exposure to direct sunlight for longest color life

Workshop Policy

Workshops and events are held rain or shine unless stated otherwise. We generally do not offer refunds for workshops, plant walks, or other events. If you are unable to attend an event you’ve signed up for, please notify us as soon as possible, and we will issue a store credit for the value of your seat to be used toward the purchase of a spot at any future event. This credit never expires.

Vintage

All vintage pieces are sold as-is. We ask that you read descriptions and measurements carefully before purchasing, and reach out via our Contact page if you have any questions.

We seek out the highest quality vintage to ensure that the pieces we share can be enjoyed for the longest possible time, despite this being their second (or third, or fourth…) lifetime! Keep in mind that vintage pieces may have normal signs of wear or other minor flaws. We do our best to detect any flaws and note/photograph them on the product page.

Unworn vintage pieces are eligible for exchange or store credit only — read more in the Returns + Exchanges section above.

Note: A great way to figure out if a vintage piece will fit is to measure a garment you already own (ideally in a similar cut), and see if the measurements match up. For example, the waist of your favorite jeans measures 29” — if the pants you’d like to buy have the same waist measurement, chances are they’ll fit.

Our measurements are taken in inches. Keep in mind that a garment with a measurement that is exactly your own will be skin-tight, so a top with a bust measurement of 36” will fit busts up to 36”.

Vintage care instructions:
Hand wash with mild detergent in cold water
(or on delicate cycle with like colors - linen and cotton only)
Do not dry clean
Air dry in the shade
Limit exposure to direct sunlight for longest color life
