Natural dyeing and learning about the plants around us is fun for all ages! I recommend my private plant walks and workshops for kids ages 6+. When scheduling an event with me, I ask that there is one adult present for every two children; for example, a group of 12 kids will have at least six accompanying adults.

A private session is ideal for your group if:

• You’re interested in learning all ages techniques for dyeing with plants, but aren’t sure where to begin

• You’d like to learn a specific dye technique, get familiarized with specific plant(s), or customize the curriculum to your group’s liking

• You’d like to plan a gathering (e.g. birthday or other special celebration) around getting creative with plant dyes

I offer three formats for private events:

Plant Walk & Guided Forage (2-3 hours)
Join me at a location of your choice in the greater Los Angeles area – or let me provide you with options for my favorite spots to see and gather dye plants! – and we’ll spend our time together learning about and foraging for wild plants to be used for dye. I’ll share stories and knowledge about the plants we see, will guide you to safely and ethically forage them for dye, and advise you on how to prepare and work with their colors at home. This outing and instruction can range from general (let’s go to this location and see what plants we see) to specific (“I’d like to gather and learn about eucalyptus and sagebrush”).

Natural Dye Workshop (2-3 hours)
I’ll bring my dye supplies to a location chosen/provided by you and will teach you the step-by-step process of natural dyeing, or a specific dye technique of your choosing. If you’re interested in a specific technique (like dyeing with food waste, making flower and leaf prints, etc.), we’ll spend the time focused on that. I can bring dyeable textiles for each participant – like cotton bandanas or t-shirts, bamboo socks, etc. – or we can work with garments/textiles you provide.

Combination Guided Forage & Natural Dye Workshop (4-5 hours)
We’ll meet at a location in the greater Los Angeles area where we can learn about and gather plants in the field and set up for dyeing with them. Since the locations that offer the space and amenities to do both activities are limited, this will typically be a spot I’ll recommend – or I can join you on your land, at home, at school, or in another location where we have both permission to forage and infrastructure for heating dyes and rinsing textiles. We’ll walk and I’ll talk about the plants we see, sharing stories and knowledge about them, and I’ll guide you in safely and ethically foraging them for dye. Then, we’ll prepare dye from the plants we’ve gathered and I’ll guide you in coaxing out their range of colors (or we can focus on a specific technique of your choosing, like flower and leaf printing). I can bring dyeable textiles for each participant – like cotton bandanas or t-shirts, bamboo socks, etc. – or we can work with garments/textiles you provide.

Please plan to schedule your private event at least a month in advance to allow for adequate planning. Upon checking out, you’ll be prompted to choose your preferred event date. Dates are not guaranteed until I get in touch with you by email to confirm.
